Thank you everyone for everything, this is the last chapter of the main story. Enjoy!

○ 257 DAYS LATER

From the summer when the death game was supposed to be held, particularly without my brother causing any incidents, time passed, and spring arrived. The trees surrounding the pond where I used to frequently jump into were all dyed pink, and cherry blossom petals fluttered down. While cicadas were singing during the summer, now even on weekdays during the day, the place was bustling with people enjoying flower viewing parties and social gatherings, seemingly made up of company employees. Please read this at ChocoCats.

“Look, Ojii-chan, the cherry blossoms are already at their peak over here. They’ll probably bloom soon over there too, won’t they?”

I pointed my smartphone camera, connected to Grandpa, towards the cherry blossom trees. Grandpa apparently had completed rehabilitation without difficulty and was now forming a band with the locals. On the other side of the screen, I could see acoustic guitars and microphones.

“They have bloomed already, huh? They look even more beautiful this year. Is it because Mai passed the high school entrance exam?”

As for me, I had passed the exam without incident and had been accepted into the stage of “Sayo Jigoku”, the same high school as my brother.

There, I saw students who I had never seen in my brother’s study group, which had appeared in “Sayo Jigoku.”

But there’s something different about the people from “Sayo Jigoku” and sometimes I feel like my brother wouldn’t have caused the tragedy that night even if I hadn’t done anything.

The protagonist, Hiroshi-kun, who was supposedly an ordinary guy, had also become one of the top-performing students after my brother. And despite supposedly having feelings only for Himegasaki-san, he dated his childhood friend.

I met him once in the library, but when Hiroshi-kun saw me, he muttered “So that’s the reason.” and left without saying anything else. Please read this at ChocoCats.

T/N: IS THIS A HINT THAT HIROSHI-KUN MIGHT BE A REINCARNATOR TOO?!

“Ojii-chan, you weren’t that happy when it was my turn…?”

My brother muttered beside me. But Grandpa, who apparently heard him, laughed cheerfully.

“Well, I thought Makoto would definitely pass the exam.”

“That means you were worried I was stupid enough to fail, right!?”

“Hahaha. Well, because Jii-chan believed that Mai is a person full of miracles!”

“Are you just plainly trying to gloss over it?”

“Come on, you guys have school, right? Don’t waste your time talking to an old man on the phone and go study well!”

“Ah!”

Grandpa finally hung up the call. I glanced at my brother.

“He hung up…”

“That’s perfect, isn’t it? I also wanted to spend some time alone with Mai soon.”

My brother said so while squeezing my hand tightly.

I successfully passed high school entrance exams, and my brother didn’t end up holding a death game. It was peaceful as if it were drawn in a picture, but my brother’s actions towards me were becoming more intense day by day. Please read this at ChocoCats.

The morning started with my brother’s wake-up call, and we were always together when we were at home. We went to school together, had lunch together, and even after school, we were always together. I was worried about whether I could make friends if things were like this, but some students found my brother’s behaviour amusing, so I haven’t felt left out in class.

He separated from me when our parents were around, but when they were not, we were always so close. Even when we were sitting next to each other, there used to be a distance of a fist’s length between us, but now it was either my brother being completely in me or me being completely in him.

“Onii-chan, haven’t you been too close recently?”

“Do you not like it?”

“It’s not that I don’t like it, but I feel like I have fewer chances to interact with people other than you.”

“Isn’t it too late for that now?”

My brother laughed as if he was making fun of me. He was completely deliberate about it. I felt like I wanted to get back at him, so I thought about what surprise I could come up with today.

Even though the death game had been cancelled, I was still giving my brother “unexpected offerings” in a slightly different form.

Because I had been violently creating surprises all this time, if I suddenly stopped, it might cause him mental stress. Even though my brother was crazy, he could still feel stressed. Please read this at ChocoCats.

So I had to be considerate of my brother. I gradually reduced the frequency of the “unexpected offerings” from every day to every other day to every three days.

“Oh, make sure you open today’s bento from the small side.”

“There’s an order? What happens if I open it from the reverse?”

“It won’t open.”

I still continued making bentos. I had never once surprised my brother with them and it was frustrating.

“By the way, the weather is really nice today. There are even cumulonimbus clouds.”

I looked up at the sky while stretching my hand. Large cumulonimbus clouds floating in the sky, just like the ones I saw last summer, coupled with being near the small pond made me feel nostalgic.

Last summer, I dived into the pond. I thought, ‘maybe I’ll surprise him if I do it now,’ but I stopped because I was going to school.

“Stop it. Don’t do anything dangerous.”

Surprised by the reply that correctly guessed my thoughts, I turned around and found my brother chuckling.

“It’s annoying that you keep surprising me when I’m the one who wants to surprise you,”

“Why? I’m surprised every day,” he replied.

“You’re lying.”

“It’s true.”

He said that as he covered my lips with a kiss. “Even now it’s surprising,” he said, pinching my cheek.

“No, you’re not surprised.”

“That’s not true. Come on, let’s go, Mai.”

“Okay.”

My brother took my hand. I was frustrated but happy, so I held his hand tightly. My brother laughed like a child as we walked together down the road with rows of cherry blossom trees. Please read this at ChocoCats.

Author’s note:

Thank you for reading this. How was it? Sorry for the inconvenience caused by the change of location for this post. Originally, I wanted to publish this story as a book, so I have to revise it. Copying and pasting it amounts to about 300 pages in manuscript format, so I didn’t plan to post it here at all…

If it’s difficult to write your review, it’s okay to just give some stars. Please let me know if it was good or not.

Translator’s Note:

Hello everyone, thank you for this long ride. It was short, but I didn’t realise that it was almost 2 years since I began translating this. My deepest gratitude to everyone who’s been together with me since my early journey of this translation. This is my first time translating a series like this, it was a fun and amazing journey to reach here with you guys.

Thank you as always for all of your kind encouragement, support, ko-fi, comments, likes, and everything else! I will start finding other novels to translate next soon. So if you have a suggestion, please tell me!

As mentioned by Author-sama, if you like this novel and want to show appreciation, please go to Syosetsu and give this novel 5 stars!

Also while we are at it, please also don’t forget to give your rating and reviews on NovelUpdates too ehehe. Thank you as alwayssss <3

Proofreader’s Note:

Hi everyone!

I want to thank you all for supporting the translation of this wonderful story. I also want to apologise for always being delayed with the proofreading LOL. I volunteered to proofread thinking I’d have plenty of time but it ended up being the total opposite. Still, it was worth it to see the end of Makoto and Mai’s story in glorious English. After the extras, I still have to go back to proof the chapters from the very beginning.

If after this you still want more of the Kurobes, I recommend checking out the manga adaptation. It has amazing art by Pepu and extra scenes, and gorgeous cover art!

Please continue to support Chococats and the author on Syosetsu!

Now, see you in the extra chapter, and have a great day as always!

  1. “it was either my brother completely in me or me completely in him.” Ayo???? Does that mean???? 😳 also, thank you so much for the translations! It’s actually over, I’m sad 😭

  2. Thanku sm 4 ur hardwork to complete this series. And although im not quite satisfied with the ending but i like it. It lacks some elements but it’s good and happy ending. It was more fluffy than the horror/thrill romance type of story i expected. Wish you the best in life. Goodbye to everyone.🥰💜

  3. It’s so nice to see a story to its finish. Thank you for your hard work team! As for Hiroshi, it might be because he figured out why Makoto wasn’t interested in Himegasaki when he saw Mai. Could also be a reincarnator, which would answer why he got together with childhood friend aside from Hime being led on by Makito. If he is, I’m curious what he had planned for day 0.

  4. I can’t believe that this will finally end. I don’t know how much to thank you guys for your hard work on this beloved novel! I’m going to miss this and you guys, I really do. Our journey has finally ended, and it’s time to say goodbye.

  5. I’m surprised this is the ending! I’m glad it is a happy ending even if it’s a bit anticlimactic!
Thank you for all your hard work this is translated wonderfully and the sentiments really come through!

  6. I can’t believe we’re nearing the end of this novel
    (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)
It has been such a pleasure to read this novel due to the TL team’s efforts. Thank you!!

  7. Thank you for the translation.
I’m so happy we got an actual good ending and it looks like the protagonist is also a reincarnator. Bit short though.

  8. Thank you so much! That was a sweet ending to this story. Thank you for translating and proofreading and finishing the story for us! You are amazing! 🌼🩵

  9. Thank you so much for the translations. This was a novel that I truly got invested in and I can’t thank you enough for all the hard work both you and the author have put in so that the readers can enjoy it. It was truly a great ride!

  10. Thanks for the translation! 💖💗

I’m happy that they ended up together, and seeing Makoto’s possessiveness over Mai was interesting 💕

    But..
Like the other commentator mentioned, I just feel like there’s sth lacking? Some kind of ‘hole’ in the story if that makes sense
For the most part, I had been looking forward to seeing the day get closer to the death game for some kind of climax, sth wild to happen but nothing really big happen? (I do love the part where Makoto fool their parents, fake crying regarding their feelings for each other though)

My initial expectations and what actually happened was different. But hey I don’t mind the happy peaceful ending

Anyways, I’m looking forward to the side stories.

  11. This ending feels rushed or incomplete. Mai and Makoto both like each other yes, but there wasn’t a real climax. When they revealed their feelings to each other, that was high staked and emotional yes, but it is very unsatisfying. The overall question the beginning of the story, “Will Mai change Makoto?” was answered, but there was a secondary expectation the story gave the audience about the day of the death game arriving and seeing SOMETHING happen. I am disappointed with the ending. It reminds me of Erased a little bit because like that anime, the overall story was good, and the ending makes sense for the most part. It just feels like a bunch of hype for nothing and everything just resolved itself peacefully.

  12. ☺🤗🥰 I am so happy. This was so damn beautiful

    Thank you translator nim.

Wish it had explained clearly how Mai feels as it still feels somewhat missing but in the end this was a true masterpiece.

  13. You said the main story was finished with this chapter, so that means there’s side stories out? Thank you so much for translating it, i really enjoy the story!!

    1. thank you so much chococats team :)) im still surprised that the parents accepted them that easily
